Eating well on camping trips may seem impossible, but with the right knowledge, it can be done

1. Creative Coolers

Freeze containers of soup, pasta sauce, and water-filled cartons of milk, and stick them in a cooler or insulated bag. They’ll keep other items cool and save you from needing to purchase ice on the road!

2. Measure Up

Pre-chop vegetables and pre-cook meats, then measure them out and store them in labeled Ziploc bags for easy access and time efficiency while camping.

3. The Water Bottle Trick

Use disposable water bottles to store salad dressing, oils, and sauces, rather than lugging the heavier containers to the campgrounds.

4. Consolidate Utensils

If you’re looking to lighten your load, all you need is a fork, a spoon, and a Swiss Army knife. You can use the tool to open canned goods, slice bread, cut meat, or even chop a stick in half! And don’t forget the spork…

5. Don't Forget the H2O

Don’t leave the house without making sure that you will have access to clean water during your trip. Find out if your campsite has running water, and if they don’t, make sure you pack purification tablets to use for drinking and cooking water.

6. Think Light

Ideal camping food is light, filling, and expands when cooked. Beans and grains will be light on your back and keep you satisfied and energized during your trip.

7. Keep the Bears Away

Make sure your cooking site is at least 100 feet away from your sleeping area, and keep food items sealed and your garbage well-contained so that animals can’t get to it! The easiest and yet at the same time the most difficult place to store your bag is in a tree. Hoist your food container into a tree 4 feet away from the trunk and 10 feet above the ground if there are bears in the area.
